Goal 1: Self Perpetuating Animal Bank

In May 2024, RIPA launched the first of its kind, Self-Perpetuating Animal Bank. A total of 70 families in Rubirizi district became owners of livestock through the first phase of the program aiming to socially and economically empower farmer in the community.

Our Model: Okuhereza

Inspired by the cultural tradition of giving cattle ‘Okuhereza’ in which the generous exchange of cows between farmers promotes breeding and heard expansion, RIPA believes empowering smallholder farmers through first-time ownership of livestock on the agreement to multiply and return the gift for another farmer provides a model for communities to increase their livestock, their income and build unity.

RIPA delivers training and capacity building to support all income-generating initiatives. These include, promotion of dairy farming using zero grazing, zero grazing goat rearing, optimizing agricultural production and promoting market access.
