RIPA (Rural Initiatives for Poverty Alleviation) is an indigenous Non-Governmental Organization pioneered and based in Rubirizi District, Uganda.
We are on a mission to propel rural communities out of poverty through income generating initiatives.
7 million households in Uganda rely on agriculture as their primary source of income. With increasing socio-economic and environmental pressures like a shortage of land, limited capital, access to markets, and unpredictable climate, smallholder farmers are increasingly at risk of losing their livelihoods and entrapping them in a cycle of poverty.
Rooted in the local community, RIPA is well positioned to bridge the gaps between local leaders and families, empowering the whole community through profitable and sustainable value chains.
Born and raised in Bunyaruguru, a sub-country in Rubirizi District, our founder Vincent Tumusiime Bamugaya, was a witness of the gradual economic decline of a once thriving rural community that relied on agriculture and fisheries, which today struggles due to increasing socio-economic and environmental pressures like shortage of land and limited access to credit.
With fewer than 250 heads of cattle in the district which stands at a ratio of 1 cow to 40 people, the challenge local farmers developing steady income streams is very high. Owning livestock and earning from their produce presents a new opportunity for a brighter future.
